The Michigan State Police (MSP) Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (EMHSD) hosted a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) training on July 13 helping to better prepare 70 Michigan emergency responders for a manmade or natural disaster.
The exercise simulated a chemical explosion and possible hazardous device, such as a bomb, at the Michigan State University (MSU) agricultural complex. The complex consists of three buildings and can accommodate a total of 50 students during class sessions.
Participants were charged with developing an action plan, locating and treating victims, isolating the area and determining the integrity of the affected buildings. The exercise provided emergency responders with the opportunity to practice the pre-designed emergency plan and work with key agencies and disciplines in Michigan.
"Exercises of this nature play a vital role in ensuring that Michigan emergency responders are prepared to respond to an actual manmade or natural disaster," said Capt. Eddie Washington, commander of the MSP EMHSD. "Remaining vigilant and continuously training for potential disasters and terrorist attacks is essential in keeping Michigan's residents safe."
The CBRNE exercise was part of a week-long refresher training for members of the Michigan National Guard 51st Civil Support Team. Additional participants included the MSP Bomb Squad, East Lansing, Lansing and MSU police departments, Lansing Metro Regional Response Team comprised of the Delta Township, East Lansing, Lansing and Meridian Township fire departments, as well as the American Red Cross.
