High School Students Experience Trooper Training

Contact:  Ms. Nancy Shaffer, MSP Training Academy (517) 322-6319

Next week, 48 Michigan high school students will experience the training needed to become Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers during the 32nd annual Michigan District of Kiwanis Student Trooper Program.  The program will begin on June 24 at the MSP Training Academy in Lansing.

Between wake-up at 5 a.m. and lights-out at 10 p.m., the students will learn about traffic and criminal law, defensive tactics, firearms and marksmanship fundamentals, first-aid, water safety, narcotics, search and seizure, patrol tactics, crash investigations, law enforcement career opportunities, forensic science, conservation law, underwater recovery and character issues of leadership.

"The program promotes the importance of education and helps build teamwork while learning about law enforcement fundamentals," said Capt. Christopher W. Lewis, commander of the MSP Human Resources and Training Division.  "In just one short week, we see these students become fine-tuned young adults determined to meet with success."

The school is designed for highly motivated young men and women who are seriously interested in a career in law enforcement.  Each student is sponsored by one of the Michigan District of Kiwanis clubs located throughout the state.  The school is hosted by the MSP with assistance from deputies and officers from other Michigan police agencies.

Students accepted to the 32nd Michigan District of Kiwanis Student Trooper Program include:
