Commercial vehicle enforcement officers from four states joined together on June 12 to conduct an enforcement operation aimed at locating unsafe commercial vehicles and drivers who operate along the shared borders of Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

Officers in all four states conducted a total of 757 commercial vehicle inspections, resulting in 878 equipment violations and 232 driver violations.  During the day, 147 vehicles and 47 drivers were placed out-of-service for serious violations. 

In addition, officers issued 367 traffic citations for a variety of violations including overweight vehicles, speeding, unqualified drivers and unsafe equipment. 

During one inspection in Michigan, the Michigan Department of Agriculture assisted Michigan State Police (MSP) motor carrier officers confiscate and dispose of more than 100 pounds of adulterated food.

"The Michigan State Police remains committed to ensuring a safe environment for motorists and highway workers alike, and will continue to aggressively pursue compliance of state and federal regulations," said Captain Robert R. Powers, Jr., commander of the MSP Traffic Safety Division.  "The number of violations documented during this enforcement period underscores the need for continued strict enforcement of safety regulations governing commercial vehicles."   

Additional joint efforts will occur throughout the year to encourage drivers and companies to maintain compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, which enhance the safety of all drivers and reduce highway fatalities.
