Michigan State Police (MSP)
Director Colonel Peter C. Munoz has announced the retirement of Lieutenant
Colonel Thomas J. Miller effective March 30. Miller has served as a deputy
director and member of the department's Executive Council since 2003, and
commander of the Field Services Bureau since June 2006.
As commander of the Field
Services Bureau, Miller provided executive direction and leadership to more than
2,000 enlisted and civilian employees assigned to the department's 64 posts, and
the Field Operations, Motor Carrier and Special Investigation divisions.
"Lieutenant Colonel Miller's drive
and innovative style will surely be missed," Munoz said. "His work in bringing
21st century technology to the State Police will be his lasting
legacy."
Miller enlisted with the
department in 1982, and graduated as a member of the 97th Trooper
Recruit School. In his 25-year career, Miller has served in all three of the
department's bureaus. He started his career at the New Baltimore and Detroit
posts, followed by stints in the Executive, Special Operations, Criminal
Investigation, Emergency Management and Communications divisions before being
promoted to deputy director of the Administrative Services Bureau in September
2003.
From 1993 to 1997, Miller
served as the commander of the Tri-County Metro Narcotics Squad and from 1999 to
2002, he served as project director for the development of the state's 800 MHz
radio system, the Michigan Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS).
Miller is a graduate of
the Criminal Justice Leadership Academy in Lansing. He holds a bachelor's degree
in criminal justice from Wayne State University and a master's degree in public
administration from Western Michigan University. In 1993, Miller received the
State Bar of Michigan's Donald S. Leonard Award, recognizing excellence in
continuing education as an active officer of the MSP.
During his 25 years with the department, Miller has held the ranks of trooper,
sergeant, lieutenant, first lieutenant, inspector, captain and lieutenant
colonel.
Miller is a native of
Detroit. He currently resides in Bath with his wife and has two adult sons.
After retiring from the MSP, Miller will begin a new career with Motorola in
their Government Relations Division.
