NEWS RELEASE
January 31, 2007

GRASS LAKE TOWNSHIP. Officers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) and the Jackson Narcotics Enforcement Team (JNET) seized approximately 99 kilograms of cocaine from a commercial motor vehicle Monday night. The cocaine, with an estimated street value of nearly $2.5 million, was concealed within a load of lettuce.

An MSP motor carrier officer working at the eastbound I-94 scales in Jackson County stopped the commercial motor vehicle with two passengers for an equipment violation. During a search of the vehicle, the officer located a large amount of cocaine. The vehicle was traveling from the West Coast to the Detroit area.

Officers from the JNET and the MSP First District Hometown Security Team were requested to assist with the vehicle search. In total, 99 kilograms of cocaine was recovered. The JNET is handling the follow-up investigation.

Both individuals in the commercial motor vehicle were arrested and turned over to the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Their names are being withheld pending criminal proceedings.

The JNET is a multijurisdictional drug task force consisting of officers from the MSP, Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Jackson City Police Department.
