Lansing - The Michigan State Police (MSP) is pleased to announce the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry (PSOR) is getting a new look, offering users increased search capabilities and more information about registered sex offenders.
The new site allows users to more easily search for offenders using name, city, zip code, county or campus/school. The PSOR web site previously allowed searches only by entering the offender's zip code or full name with an approximate age.
In addition, users will get more detailed information about each offender such as whether the offender is attending or employed at a post-secondary school (a provision of PA 542 of 2002) and a description of the offense(s) via a link to the Michigan Compiled Laws. Additionally, users will be able to submit an email tip directly to the MSP from the offender's profile page.
To increase usability, the photograph of each offender will appear as a thumbnail next to the offender's information versus a full-size graphic. Users with slower Internet connections will be able to turn off the thumbnail feature to speed up page load time.
Over the next year, additional features and other information will be added to the site in an ongoing effort to make the PSOR a helpful tool for the public. Some upcoming enhancements include the display of incarcerated offenders, the inclusion of absconders and information on conviction date and last verification date.
The PSOR has been online at http://www.mipsor.state.mi.us since 1999. As of November 3, 2006, there were 19,489 offenders in the PSOR. The PSOR currently does not include offenders who have moved out of the state, are incarcerated, have a known false address or are juveniles.
