Suspect Arrested For 1999 Sexual Assault; DNA Database Helps Identify Suspect

Contact:  F/Lieutenant Ann McCaffery, MSP Ypsilanti Post, (734) 482-1211

November 13, 2006

Ypsilanti - The Michigan State Police (MSP) Ypsilanti Post and Second District Fugitive Team have arrested Gregory Deon Tubbs, 29, of Ypsilanti Township for the 1999 sexual assault of a 23-year-old female in Ypsilanti Township.  Tubbs was identified as a suspect following a recent DNA match in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

In 1999, the victim left the Boogie Down Motor Cycle Club at 310 South St. in Ypsilanti City with a man she met at the club.  The man drove the victim to Watson Street in Ypsilanti Township where he sexually assaulted her.

The victim sought medical treatment at a Monroe County hospital where an MSP trooper collected physical evidence and began an investigation.  The suspect remained unidentified until an MSP forensic laboratory matched the evidence with a DNA sample in CODIS.

Following the match, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office authorized a two count felony warrant for Tubbs for first degree criminal sexual conduct.    Tubbs was arraigned on November 7 in the 14B District Court and is currently held in jail without bond.  His preliminary examination is scheduled for November 16.

CODIS is a national DNA database that allows for DNA profiles from open cases and convicted felons to be compared nationwide.  Michigan began using CODIS in 2001.
