Birch Run - Thanks to the efforts of the Mustang Club of Mid-Michigan and the Saginaw Career Complex Vocational High School, a Michigan State Police (MSP) 1992 Ford Mustang patrol vehicle is ready to roll again. The two groups presented MSP commanders with the keys during a special ceremony Sunday at the Mustang Club of Mid-Michigan’s 13th Annual All Mustang and Ford Show.
"The MSP has a proud tradition of service to Michigan citizens and our historic patrol cars are part of that tradition," said Lieutenant Colonel Thomas J. Miller, commander of the MSP Field Services Bureau. "We appreciate the generosity and dedication of these individuals in restoring an important piece of State Police history for future generations to enjoy."
The Mustang Club of Mid-Michigan volunteered their time and resources earlier this year after a club member, who is also a retired MSP officer, brought the vehicle to their attention. Using donations from several organizations, the club refurbished the vehicle’s exterior and enlisted the help of the Saginaw Career Complex Vocational High School to restore the car’s mechanics. The club will also help ensure the vehicle remains a historical resource for the MSP by performing yearly maintenance.
The restored 1992 Ford Mustang will be used for parades and other public events as part of the department’s historic fleet which also includes a 1937 Ford, 1975 Plymouth Gran Fury, 1991 Camaro and 1995 Caprice.
The Ford Mustang was used as a patrol vehicle by the MSP from 1989 to 1994.
