New Director Sets Course For State Police; Revised Statements Articulate Agency Direction

Contact:  Shanon Akans, MSP Public Affairs, (517) 336-6364

September 12, 2006

East Lansing - The Michigan Department of State Police (MSP), under the direction of Colonel Peter C. Munoz, recently unveiled a new Mission, Vision and Philosophy of Leadership to provide department members with a clear direction for the MSP, an image of the department’s desired future and the specific ways in which department managers are expected to lead.

"I strongly believe we must set the course for the department with a well-designed roadmap, and this is the first step toward meeting this goal," said Munoz, who was appointed the 16th director of the MSP by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm on June 10.

The new Mission, Vision and Philosophy of Leadership complement the department’s long-standing Value Statement: A PROUD Tradition of SERVICE, through EXCELLENCE, INTEGRITY and COURTESY.

"I am especially proud because these statements were developed through the combined efforts of department members and our executive leadership," Munoz added. "As Director, it is important to me to include department members in major decisions affecting the agency."

Included in the Mission are the department’s four Organizational Goals, which are:

  1. Prevent and investigate crime and enforce the law
  2. Improve traffic safety
  3. Provide for homeland security and emergency preparedness and response
  4. Provide the highest quality specialized services
