EAST LANSING. Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Colonel Peter C. Munoz has announced the transfer of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas J. Miller from the Administrative Services Bureau to the Field Services Bureau effective June 18. In his new position, Miller will continue to serve as one of three deputy directors and a member of the department?s Executive Council.

As commander of the Field Services Bureau, Miller provides executive direction and leadership to more than 2,000 enlisted and civilian employees assigned to the department?s 64 posts, and the Field Operations, Motor Carrier and Special Investigation divisions.

Prior to his transfer, Miller served as the commanding officer of the Administrative Services Bureau, which includes the divisions of Budget and Financial Services, Criminal Justice Information Center, Human Resources, Management Services and Training, as well as the 911 Administrative Section and the Criminal Justice Information Systems Policy Council.

Miller enlisted with the department in 1982, and graduated as a member of the 97th Trooper Recruit School. In his 24-year career, Miller has served in all three of the department?s bureaus. He started his career at the New Baltimore and Detroit posts, followed by stints in the Executive, Special Operations, Criminal Investigation, Emergency Management and Communications divisions before being promoted to Deputy Director in September 2003.

While at the Communications Division, Miller served as project director for the development of the state?s 800 MHz radio system, the Michigan Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS).

Miller is a graduate of the Criminal Justice Leadership Academy in Lansing. He holds a bachelor?s degree in criminal justice from Wayne State University and a master?s degree in public administration from Western Michigan University. In 1993, Miller received the State Bar of Michigan?s Donald S. Leonard Award, recognizing excellence in continuing education as an active officer of the MSP.

Miller is a native of Detroit. He currently resides in Bath with his wife. He has two adult children.
