East Lansing - Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Colonel Tadarial J. Sturdivant has announced his retirement from the MSP effective June 9, 2006. Sturdivant, who is the 15th Director of the MSP, was appointed to his cabinet-level position by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm on
February 1, 2003.
Sturdivant characterized his decision to retire as a deeply personal one, which will allow him to be closer to home and spend more time with his family.
“I am blessed Governor Granholm afforded me the opportunity to lead this great organization. Serving as director has been both challenging and rewarding,” Sturdivant stated. “Like so many other MSP retirees, I will leave the agency, but will remain close to it in spirit. I leave knowing that the agency has the Governor’s full support and that together, we have accomplished much for the safety of Michigan residents.”
Granholm said Sturdivant has provided exemplary service and leadership and she appreciates the time and energy he has committed to serving the state.
“Col. Sturdivant is an outstanding leader,” Granholm said. “He has worked to make our state safer by focusing special attention on apprehending fugitives, strengthening our homeland security preparedness and pursuing technology to enhance the work of both state and local law enforcement. I will miss his counsel and service and wish him continued success.”
Sturdivant enlisted with the MSP in September 1978. He was first assigned to the Ypsilanti Post and later served at the New Baltimore, Flat Rock, Romeo and Jackson posts, as well as in the Training Division in Lansing.
In March 1996, he was promoted to captain of the Second District in southeastern Michigan, serving as commander of that district’s seven posts and Metro Dispatch for six years. Prior to his appointment as Director, Sturdivant was assigned as the commander of the Uniform Services Bureau.
During his almost 28 years with the department, Sturdivant has held the ranks of trooper, sergeant, lieutenant, first lieutenant, inspector, captain, lieutenant colonel and colonel.
Sturdivant holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Wayne State University and is a graduate of the School of Police Staff and Command for Northwestern University and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Executive Institute.
