Lansing - Four police officers from the Turkey National Police are among 15 officers attending a leadership class at the Michigan State Police (MSP) Training Academy this week.
The officers – one sergeant, two lieutenants and one captain – are attending the MSP’s Leadership Development program. During the weeklong course, they will receive instruction in topics such as mentoring, strategic planning, media relations, principle-centered leadership and policing in a democracy. The goal of the program is to help students balance management demands with leadership judgment.
They are joined in the class by officers from the MSP, the Grand Blanc Township Police Department, the Monroe Country Sheriff’s Department and the Berrien Country Sheriff’s Department.
The officers from the Turkey National Police were referred to the program from Michigan State University (MSU) where they are enrolled in a criminal justice program. The Turkish officers each specialize in different fields, including technological crimes, organized crime and money laundering and psychological operations and anti-terrorism. All Leadership Development graduates can qualify for three university credits at MSU upon completion of some additional writing assignments.
The Turkey National Police, which is responsible for police functions in the cities and towns of Turkey, is comprised of approximately 200,000 police officers.
