LANSING – Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that Michigan Technological University will receive a $56,250 grant to pay for risk assessment, goal-setting, remedial steps and other components of an all-hazard mitigation plan to protect the health and safety of students, faculty, employees and surrounding residents. The Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant was made available from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
“In the past decade, natural disasters have struck numerous campuses across the county with serious consequences, underscoring the need for greater safety and security,” said Granholm. “Michigan Tech will become one of the few universities nationwide to thoroughly assess risk and vulnerability, and complete a mitigation plan.”
Michigan Tech and the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Regional Development Commission will jointly develop the plan, identifying sources of hazards, special events that may be terrorism targets, and prioritizing mitigation steps to protect the health and safety of students, faculty, employees and surrounding residents.
