EAST LANSING. Michigan State Police Director Colonel Tadarial J. Sturdivant is pleased to announce Cyndie Miller from the Battle Creek Post is the 2004 recipient of the department’s Floyd R. Bell Jr. Civilian of the Year Award.
Miller, a 6-year employee of the department, was chosen for the award as a result of her accomplishments both on and off the job and for her efforts to continue the department’s proud tradition of SERVICE through EXCELLENCE, INTEGRITY and COURTESY.
As secretary of the Battle Creek Post, Miller is dedicated to ensuring a positive work environment. She developed new ways to enhance communication at the post by creating an employee newsletter and writing articles for the post’s Web site. Miller also updated the radio room reference books and reformatted the layout of post policies.
Known for initiating action, Miller is not afraid to take on new tasks such as serving as the post’s Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) Terminal Agency Coordinator (TAC). In this position, Miller is the liaison between the post and the state-level LEIN Field Services office to ensure the post’s LEIN users are certified and that all LEIN requirements are met. Miller also serves as the Michigan Criminal Justice Information Network (MiCJIN) Portal Administrator for the post.
Miller assisted multiple local law enforcement agencies implement Rapid Start, a computer program developed by the FBI to track tips and other information from major cases. Miller also provides training on the use of the system.
On her own time, Miller designed a display for her local library to educate the public on the dangers of Methamphetamine and the importance of child safety seats, as well as information on wanted fugitives in the community. Miller also assisted with the development of a PowerPoint presentation used to promote the services of the Michigan State Police (MSP) Battle Creek Post at the Calhoun County Fair. Recently Miller created MSP-based decorations for a Christmas tree on display at Kellogg Cereal City USA during the Festival of Lights.
Miller has a reputation of being optimistic, honest, dependable, unselfish and helpful. She makes phone calls and sends get-well cards to MSP members who are injured in the line of duty. In addition, Miller has started a history book for Battle Creek Post and assisted with planning and organizing the 5th District retirees’ dinner.
A Battle Creek native, Miller previously worked as an emergency dispatcher at the MSP 5th District Regional Dispatch Center in Paw Paw. She currently works part-time as a contracted dispatcher for the Department of Homeland Security. Miller also volunteers at the Southwest Michigan Rehab Center and enjoys spending time with family and friends.
Miller’s daughter, Keri Tennant, is currently a senior majoring in psychology at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.
