EAST LANSING. Michigan State Police Director Colonel Tadarial J. Sturdivant is pleased to announce Motor Carrier Specialist Sergeant Peggy A. Hines of Motor Carrier Division Headquarters is the recipient of the 2004 Motor Carrier Officer of the Year Award.
Since 1985, the Michigan Trucking Association has sponsored this award to recognize the motor carrier officer who symbolizes outstanding professional ethics, dedication to duty and concern for giving back to their community.
Hines was recognized for her high level of knowledge and motivation both on the job and in her community. A motor carrier officer for six years, Hines is extremely knowledgeable of all Commercial Motor Vehicle laws and regulations. Her recent enforcement efforts have resulted in the apprehension of subjects wanted by the FBI in two drug-related homicides, two illegal aliens involved in drug transportation and the discovery of an under-age prostitution operation.
On her own time, Hines volunteers at a local university where she assists visually impaired students by taking class notes and typing class assignments. She also volunteers at a food bank and participates in a county outreach program to adopt a family during the Christmas season. Hines also supports the "Paws for Cause" campaign which raises money to assist with the cost of service dogs for the disabled.
Hines joined the department in 1998. After graduating from the 11th Motor Carrier Recruit School, she served at the Coldwater and Jackson Posts. In November 2004, Hines was promoted to specialist sergeant and assigned to the Motor Carrier Division Headquarters as the training and recruiting commander.
Hines is a life-long resident of Lansing and is the daughter of Ken and Julie Hines.
