East Lansing. On Tuesday, October 19, 2004, a twenty-four hour Tri-State Enforcement Operation was conducted along the adjoining Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio borders targeting unsafe commercial motor vehicles and drivers.
Officers from the Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Division, Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol coordinated their enforcement efforts focusing on commercial vehicles being operated in an unsafe manner. Seventy-two officers participated in the tri-state operation stopping vehicles for moving traffic, size and weight, equipment, and driver violations. Officers also focused their attention on vehicles hauling hazardous materials.
The twenty-four hour operation resulted in 405 commercial vehicles being stopped. Officers conducted 330 vehicle/driver inspections identifying 379 equipment violations and 209 driver violations. Officers placed 88 vehicles and 36 drivers out-of-service because the violations observed presented an immediate danger to the motoring public. In addition, officers issued 291 citations including, 63 for speed, 68 for equipment violations, and 30 for overweight. Two drivers were cited for possession of open intoxicants.
