East Lansing. The Michigan State Police, Motor Carrier Division conducted over 200 special truck enforcement operations during fiscal year 2004 estimated to have saved two lives, prevented 52 truck-related crashes, and 35 injuries.
These operations, knows as Special Transportation Enforcement Team (STET) operations, were completed as part of a grant from the Michigan Truck Safety Commission (MTSC). STET operations allow motor carrier officers to make contact with drivers and companies who do not normally cross weigh stations. They also provide a visible enforcement presence on Michigan's roadways.
During STET operations, officers target hazardous behaviors by commercial vehicle operators such as speeding and following too close. In addition, commercial vehicle operators are checked for the proper license and for compliance with the hours-of-service regulations.
During fiscal year 2004, officers issued 5,954 citations and conducted 2,612 safety inspections. It is estimated that safety inspections conducted by officers saved two lives, prevented 52 truck-related crashes, and 35 injuries.
