Contact:  Trooper Rob Herbstreith 269-683-4411

The Michigan State Police School Liaison curriculum has introduced a homeland security class for students in K-12. The Teaching, Educating, And Mentoring (T.E.A.M.) Program can also be used for school age students in other groups and organizations.

The lessons are divided into the following age groups:

  • K-2:  Get Ready, Get Safe. Acquaints elementary school children with the basic ways to recognize, prepare, and feel safe when faced with an emergency situation.
  • 3-5:  Feeling Safe And Secure. Helps students to understand the importance of being prepared for emergency situations and how they may be able to help when an emergency situation develops.
  • 6-8:  Take Action. Students are introduced to terrorism and how it has changed our world and created the need for Homeland Security. Students are also introduced to the concept of community preparedness and things they can do that will make their schools and communities safer.
  • High school:  Homeland Security: Every Citizen's Responsibility. Students are introduced to terrorism, Homeland Security, and the Seven Signs of Terrorism. Students also learn about community preparedness and how to construct an emergency "go kit", as well as other action items that can be taken, which will make their communities safer.

These classes are for any school, group, or organization in those age groups.

Also available is a presentation from Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and the Regional Community Policing Institute (RCPI) that can be used for neighborhood watch, citizen groups, and organizations. This presentation informs citizens on how they can help prevent further attacks upon America by terrorists. Michigan specific information is included. The citizens are encouraged to become participants in their own security.

Other Homeland Security presentations available from the Michigan State Police Emergency Management Division (MSP EMD) include Family Preparedness, Domestic Terrorism, and the Seven Signs Of Terrorism.

Class sizes for the adult programs have a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 60. Call to set an appointment for your group and watch this site for future dates.
