Training Division

The mission of the Training Division is "to provide leadership and coordination in the development and delivery of innovative training programs, educational opportunities, and support services." The mission is being accomplished by successfully targeting our efforts through four goals:

  • "to develop and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth for Michigan State Police employees;"
  • "to provide services that support the enforcement and public safety efforts of the criminal justice community;"
  • "to pursue resources and facilities essential to accomplishing the mission of the Training Division;"
  • "to create and maintain a positive learning environment which integrates organizational values with education and training."

The Training Division provides both video production and photographic services for the agency.  Numerous high quality training videos are produced on equipment that includes the latest industry standard batacam technology.  The photography unit maintains a complete archive of photographic negatives, which can be accessed through Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.

The Academy Law Enforcement Resource Center is available to all Michigan law enforcement agencies.  It maintains a rich inventory of video and written material pertinent to our customers.  In addition, a liaison is maintained between the resource center and the many public libraries throughout Michigan.  The resource center actively uses the Internet for business purposes.

Academy & Support Services Section:  This section is responsible for the event and program coordination for the Academy campus.  This includes providing high quality classrooms; a cafeteria offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, and break items; a clean well maintained facility fostering a pleasant learning atmosphere; a reception/information desk staffed 7:45am to 5:00pm Monday-Friday; and a complete support staff to assist program coordinators with any and all needs.

Trooper Development Section: This section is responsible for recruit and in-service training for the department.  In-service programs are continuing on a regular basis for over 1400 front-line and supervisory enforcement personnel. In-service training is also offered to all law enforcement agencies in Michigan.  This section also provides regular training and instructor development for first-aid and defensive tactics. Both voluntary and mandatory wellness programs are conducted under the supervision of this section annually.

Career Development Section: This section is responsible for numerous training programs and other learning opportunities for employees of the department and other criminal justice agencies. Ordnance related training is provided to all new recruits as well as all enforcement members of the department and other law enforcement agencies. Train the trainer programs are regularly offered both within the agency and for other law enforcement departments. The training programs use the most current technology for decision making scenarios as well as live fire tactical exercises.

This section also designs and initiates the development and delivery of numerous leadership programs organized around four primary dimensions; Learning, Caring, Vision, and Courage. Leadership principles have been integrated into all programs from the line level through the executive level of the department.  Specific programs are offered for supervisors and managers.

Numerous professional development programs are made available to customers both in and out of  the department. Some examples include instructor development, presentation skills, executive development opportunities and other specifically designed programs to meet customer needs.

Regularly scheduled precision driving programs are offered for law enforcement throughout Michigan. These programs include basic driving programs, instructor development programs, pursuit schools, and recruit driver training. Defensive driving lectures are offered for criminal justice agencies as well as private sector organizations. In addition, the Precision Driving Unit offers basic and instructor police motor cycle training. The Police Patrol Vehicle Evaluation and Purchasing Program is internationally recognized for the testing of patrol vehicles.

The Michigan State Police Training Division offers regularly scheduled legal training for law enforcement personnel throughout Michigan by taking the instruction across Michigan and hosting training seminars at the Academy in Lansing. Each session is generally filled to capacity (250 persons) in the Academy auditorium. Legal training is also routinely provided as part of the recruit and in-service training programs.
