LANSING - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced the appointment of Steven A. Transeth to the Michigan Public Service Commission. Transeth, of Lansing, most recently served as Assistant Director and Legal Counsel for the non-partisan Michigan Legislative Service Bureau. He is a graduate of Thomas M. Cooley Law School and holds a master's degree and bachelor's degree from Michigan State University.

Transeth, an independent, is appointed to the Commission for the balance of a term expiring July 2, 2009. He replaces J. Peter Lark who has resigned from the Commission effective today.

The Michigan Public Service Commission regulates investor-owned natural gas, electric and telecommunications utilities, rural electrical cooperatives, and interstate motor carriers. The Commission also establishes safety standards and sets specific rates for services provided by the state's utilities and ensures dependable quality at reasonable rates that meet the public's needs and maintains a healthy economy for Michigan consumers.

This appointment is subject to Section 6 of Article V of the Michigan State Constitution of 1963. It stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Michigan Senate within 60 days.
