The Michigan Relay Center is a communications system that allows hearing persons and hearing-impaired, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired persons to communicate by telephone. As mandated by the Michigan Public Service Commission, all providers of basic local exchange telephone service must share in the cost of providing Telecommunications Relay Service (TRS). The MPSC has issued a Consumer Alert regarding the Michigan Relay Center. AT&T Michigan provides TRS service on behalf of all basic local exchange service providers in Michigan. Users may reach the Michigan Relay Center at 1-800-649-3777 or by dialing 7-1-1.
An Advisory Board, which meets every three months, was established for the Relay Center by the Michigan Telecommunications Act, Sec. 315(3). The Advisory Board's purpose is to assist and advise in the operation of the TRS in the State of Michigan. The Advisory Board prepares an annual report providing a synopsis of the Michigan Relay Center's activities for that year.
