MPSC Designates "Michigan 2-1-1" as Statewide 2-1-1 Coordinating Agency for 2008-2009

Contact:  Judy Palnau (517) 241-3323

March 11, 2008

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today designated "Michigan 2-1-1" as the statewide 2-1-1 coordinating agency from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009.

The Commission also directed "Michigan 2-1-1" to present the Commission with current information on funding, advances made in 2-1-1 availability in Michigan and any other relevant information on its progress.  That report is due by Feb. 1, 2009.

Today's designation marks the third and final year of a three-year renewal process.  The Commission will determine whether another three-year designation should be authorized after "Michigan 2-1-1" submits its report next year.

In today's order, the MPSC also noted its continued concern over uncertain funding commitments for 2-1-1 service in the future.

The abbreviated dialing number 2-1-1 has been designated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enable callers to reach community resource and referral answering points.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Labor & Economic Growth.

Case No. U-14725
