| G.E.D. Program vs. High School Completion Program |
|
This chart describes the differences between a G.E.D. Program and a High School Completion Program. We also cite various scenarios to help explain a student's eligibility to take certain tests, and thus qualify for a Michigan Merit Award. If you have further questions, please call the Office of Scholarships and Grants at 1-888-447-2687.
G.E.D. Program
(Student earns a Certificate of Completion)
|
High School
Completion Program
(Student earns a High School Diploma)
|
| Must take all four MEAP tests (and ACT, SAT, or WorkKeys tests, if needed) before end of high school graduation year. May NOT take/retake any MEAP tests (or ACT, SAT, or WorkKeys tests, if needed) after high school graduation year. |
May take/retake any/all MEAP tests (and ACT, SAT, or WorkKeys tests, if needed) prior to end of school year in which diploma is granted. Score(s) WILL count toward earning a Michigan Merit Award. |
| Scenario 1... Student never graduates from high school (would have graduated in June 2000). Student takes all four MEAP tests while still in high school. Student enrolls in GED program in March 2001, and receives certificate of completion in June 2001. Student may qualify for Michigan Merit Award. |
Scenario 4... Student never graduates from high school (would have graduated in June 2000). Student enrolls in high school completion program in March 2001, and receives diploma in June 2001. Student may take/retake any/all MEAP tests prior to end of school year in which diploma is granted. Scores WILL count toward earning Michigan Merit Award. |
| Scenario 2... Student never graduates from high school (would have graduated in June 2000). Student does not take all four MEAP tests while in high school. Student enrolls in GED program in March 2001, and receives certificate of completion in June 2001. Student may NOT take/retake any MEAP tests after June 2000. |
Scenario 5... Student never graduates from high school (would have graduated in June 1995). Student enrolls in high school completion program in March 2001, and receives diploma in June 2001. Student may NOT take/retake any MEAP tests (or ACT, SAT, or WorkKeys tests, if needed)... would have needed to have "junior" status in 1998-99 school year, or after. |
| Scenario 3... Student never graduates from high school (would have graduated in June 1995). Student enrolls in GED program in March 2001, and receives certificate of completion in June 2001. Student may NOT take/retake any MEAP tests... graduation year was prior to 2000. |
Note A... Students who have graduated from high school and wish to take/retake any/all MEAP tests in order to receive a higher scaled score, or receive a higher level for tests taken while in high school, may do so... but such scores will NOT count toward earning a Michigan Merit Award. Only students who enter a High School Completion Program and earn a high school diploma may take/retake any/all MEAP tests and/or alternate tests (ACT, SAT, or WorkKeys) prior to the end of the school year in which the diploma is granted, and have such scores count toward earning a Michigan Merit Award. In essence, a High School Completion Program "moves" a student's graduation year... a G.E.D. Program does not. For example, a student would have graduated from high school in June 2000, but does not. The student enters a High School Completion Program in March 2001, and earns a diploma in June 2001. This student's NEW graduation date is June 2001. Conversely, a student would have graduated from high school in June 2000, but does not. The student enters a G.E.D. Program in March 2001, and earns a G.E.D. certificate in June 2001. This student's graduation date REMAINS June 2000. This affects the taking of MEAP tests (or other alternate tests) for the sake of earning a Michigan Merit Award.
Note B... Under no circumstances (G.E.D. Program or High School Completion Program) is a student eligible for the award unless they had "junior" status in 1998-99, or after.
Note C... When does a high school graduation year end? We consider a new school year to begin on July 1. For example, a student who graduates from high school (or receives a diploma) on June 1 may take a test offered later in June, and earn a Michigan Merit Award because the test is taken during the high school graduation year. If the student waits until July 1, it is now too late.
