The Michigan Merit Award was
established by the Michigan legislature in 1999 (Public Act 94) for the high school graduating Classes of 2000 through 2006. The award provides up to $3,000 to high school graduates for outstanding performance on the MEAP tests. Overview of the program, including information about how to qualify.

Students who received notification of their Michigan Merit award prior to July 26, 2002, have until the 2008-09 academic year to use their funds.
These students are required to contact the Office of Scholarships and Grants at 1-888-4-GRANTS to verify their eligibility status. Students must certify by November 15th of the academic year in which they intend to use their funds. Eligibility has now expired for students who received their notification after July 26, 2002, unless you have served or are currently serving in the military.

The law changed beginning with the Class of 2003. Students have four (4) years to use their award but once initiated it must be used over two consecutive academic years. Failure to use the award over two consecutive academic years results in forfeiture of any remaining balance.

Class of 2003 - All funds must
be used by the 2006-07
academic year.
Class of 2004 - All funds must
be used by the 2007-08
academic year.
Class of 2005 - All funds must
be used by the 2008-09
academic year.
Class of 2006 - All funds must
be used by the 2009-10
academic year.

Students from the Class of 2007 now fall under the new Michigan Promise scholarship.
