Governor Whitmer delivered her fourth State of the State address on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022. Governor Whitmer spoke to the progress we've made together, shared her comprehensive vision for Michigan, and laid out policy proposals to put Michiganders first.

I Believe in Michigan

Ahead of the 2022 State of the State address, Governor Whitmer's team set out to hear from Michiganders across the state on why they believe in Michigan. Their stories are shared below in a video series. Governor Whitmer invites any Michigander to share their stories and asks: why do you believe in Michigan? Ali Rose VanOverbeke

Meet Ali Rose VanOverbeke: The owner of Genusee, a Flint startup that upcycles plastic water bottles into sustainable eyewear. Ali's company is supporting the local economy and getting bonus points for style. Doing business and doing good! I'm inspired by her work, passion, and drive to make a difference. 

Nick Miotto

Meet Nick Miotto, a member of OE324, and one of the many hard working Michiganders fixing our roads and bridges. Projects like the Gordie Howe Bridge are a great example of the progress and investment we're making in infrastructure and innovation. Hey Nick: thanks for helping us fix those damn roads!

Sheriff Jerry Clayton

Meet Washtenaw County Sheriff, Jerry Clayton. As a longstanding member of the community, he believes that public safety works when we all work together. That's why Jerry spends time meeting neighbor-to-neighbor, and building up the next generation to create a safer and more just Michigan.

Frankie Jones

Meet Frankie Jones of Ypsilanti. Like so many others in her community, much of her home was impacted by a devastating flood last June. Irreplaceable memories were lost, but she found the spirit to rebuild and support others during this tragedy. Mrs. Jones shows that tough times don't last, but tough people do.

Kendra Barclay

Meet supermom and Spain Elementary-Middle School teacher Kendra Barclay. Every day she works with the children of Detroit Public Schools to bring out their potential and set them up for a lifetime of success. Our teachers have worked through unprecedented challenges, and I will always have their back.

Brian Kerrigan

Meet Brian Kerrigan, the Upper Peninsula Regional Director of The Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights. Brian helps train aspiring carpenters and millwrights, ensuring the next generation a secure and rewarding lifelong career. This yooper is doing important work for the UP's economy, and doing right by his community. 

Governor Whitmer

We've heard stories from across our great state and as your Governor, I continue to be inspired and motivated to serve all Michiganders. We all want the same things: a good-paying job, great schools, safe communities. Thriving main streets and small businesses. Hope for a better future and a chance to get ahead. This is about all of us believing in Michigan. Together, we will put Michigan first and get it done.

Get Things Done

While, at times, we may feel divided, in the end being a Michigander is about coming together, rolling up our sleeves, and doing the hard work of building bridges. I will work with anyone, for everyone. I'm focused on creating a brighter future for all of us. We just have to believe in each other, and believe in Michigan. Let's get it done!
