Tax and Education Information

With new children also come new financial needs and effects.

Tax Exemptions
You may change the number of tax exemptions for federal, state, and local tax withholding by visiting MI HR Self-Service or by contacting the MI HR Service Center* at 1-877-766-6447. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website provides information on the federal tax effects of becoming a parent.

Adoption
You may be able to take an adoption tax credit for qualifying expenses paid to adopt an eligible child (including a child with special needs.) Additional information on the adoption credit and exclusion can be found in Publication 968, Tax Benefits for Adoption.

Paying for Education
The Department of Treasury website provides information on financial issues related to paying for your child's education.

* Secretary of State, Attorney General, Legislative, and Judicial employees should contact their agency Human Resource Office for assistance.
