A Day in the Life--DNR Fish Hatchery Technician

Fish in Hand
8:00 AM: My job is to provide daily care for brown and rainbow trout. This care starts when the fish are in the egg stage to when they are ready to be put into lakes, rivers or streams. The process of placing fish that are raised in a hatchery into a lake or stream is called "stocking."

The first thing I do on most days is to look at the fish or eggs to make sure they all are doing okay. We're constantly testing for anything that may cause the fish to become sick or die. If I discover a problem I will need to report it to the hatchery manager immediately.
