Cost per Prisoner per Day

Why it Matters: This is the average daily cost the taxpayers pay for each person in prison. This includes all costs associated with operating the correctional facilities in Michigan. This figure includes all costs such as employee salaries and benefits, prisoner health and mental health care, prisoner food, offender education and programming, prisoner transportation and utilities. A lower per diem figure shows a more efficient, fiscally prudent corrections system.
