Expenditures By Category
Why it Matters: For fiscal year 2012, state government expenditures totaled $51.8 billion. Community health, hospitals and human services (including cash assistance, disability insurance and food stamps) accounted for 38% of state government expenditures. K-12 and higher education expenditures comprised 28%. Expenditures in the chart below are greater than annually budgeted expenditures because of long-term obligations such as pension, post-employment benefits and long-term debt being included in the calculation.
