Why it Matters: For fiscal year 2011, state government expenditures totaled $54.2 billion. Community health, hospitals and human services (including cash assistance, disability insurance and food stamps) accounted for 37% of state government expenditures. K-12 and higher education expenditures comprised 28%. This chart shows that expenditures are greater than annually budgeted expenditures due to long-term commitments such as pension, post-employment benefits and long-term debt being included in the calculation.
