Obesity in the Population (adult)
Why it Matters:
Obesity is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. It also negatively impacts public health costs and educational outcomes. Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater are considered obese. Weight and height are used to calculate BMI, which provides a reasonable indicator of body fat and weight categories that may lead to health issues.

*Note: Starting in 2011, the BRFSS will include data from both landline and cell phone users. In the past, the BRFSS only collected data from landline users. This change will lead to more accurate estimates; however, BRFSS results prior to 2011 cannot be compared to BRFSS results from 2011 and beyond due to this change in methods.
