4-H Mentor Michigan Initiative Seeking AmeriCorps Members

Could you benefit from an AmeriCorps member?  As part of the 2009-2010 program year, the 4-H Mentor Michigan Initiative will enlist 80 full-time AmeriCorps members to build the capacity of mentoring organizations across the state to establish one-to-one, small group, or peer-mentoring matches and improve the quality of the mentoring programs they serve.

There are several benefits to hosting an AmeriCorps member through the 4-H Mentor Michigan Initiative, including the following:

  • Organizations supported by AmeriCorps members funded by the 4-H Mentor Michigan Initiative grants documented an increase of 3,118 active mentors during the 2008-2009 program year.  Meanwhile, organizations not supported by AmeriCorps members saw a decrease in active mentors during that same time period.
  • Organizations supported by AmeriCorps members funded by the 4-H Mentor Michigan Initiative grants served 2,856 more youth last year.  Organizations not supported by AmeriCorps members saw a decrease of youth engaged during the 2008-2009 program year.

Organizations selected to host an AmeriCorps member during the 2009-2010 program year will receive funds to cover the member's annual living allowance and health care coverage, funds to pay for local travel, training for AmeriCorps members and site supervisors, curriculum and mentoring resources to support local program development efforts, and much more.  Required of the host organization is providing the cash match per member valued at up to $4,750.

A variety of organizations are eligible to apply to host AmeriCorps members; including educational institutions, local government entities, state agencies, Michigan State University Extension offices, and other nonprofit organizations with 501(c)3 status.

Please view the 4-H Mentor Michigan Initiative 2009-2010 Request for Application .  Michigan State University Extension will accept electronic applications until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 23.  Organizations selected to host AmeriCorps members will be notified the following day.
