M-63 bridge over I-94 to close Tuesday for repairs

May 22, 2012 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on Tuesday will close the M-63 (Niles Road) bridge over I-94 in St. Joseph Township, Berrien County, for repairs. The M-63 bridge is expected to reopen by July 20, with the total $868,000 project scheduled to be complete by Aug. 18.

Construction will include bridge repaving, joint and railing replacement, concrete beam and substructure repairs, and approach work on M-63. M-63 will be detoured; lane closures will be in place on I-94 under M-63. The new bridge deck and safety improvements are expected to add 15 years to the life of the bridge.

M-63 carries an estimated 11,400 vehicles per day over I-94, according to 2010 data. Of those, 330 are commercial vehicles. More than 20 percent of the 49,600 daily vehicles on I-94 at M-63 are commercial.
