- Work on Connector is expected to start and be completed this fall.

May 14, 2012 -- Following a public involvement meeting in April, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has received federal approval to proceed with construction of a one-way connector from the end of the ramp on Pine Grove Avenue across a vacant lot to Harker Street. The Pine Grove Connector is expected to lead to future redevelopment projects along the St. Clair River in Port Huron.

Engineers plan to take bids on the estimated $300,000 project in August, with construction expected to start and be completed this fall. The project also will include a connection of the nonmotorized path across Pine Grove to 10th Street.

The one-way connector would give motorists a choice to continue straight when getting off the new I-94/I-69 exit ramp south of the Blue Water Bridge. East of 10th Street, two-way traffic would resume on Harker Street to St. Clair Street. City of Port Huron officials and MDOT proposed the connector as a main entry to the proposed development of a convention center, redevelopment of the Thomas Edison Inn, and a Baker College of Port Huron culinary school along the waterfront. Separate from this work, the city will pursue funding for improvements to upgrade Harker Street in the near future.
