29MDOT says permit needed for right-of-way snow fences December 29, 2003 -- It's no secret. Each year, residents in northern Michigan install snow fences on their property. However, the Michigan Department of Transportation is reminding property owners that construction of any fence or barricade in the highway right-of-way without a permit is prohibited by law. All work done within the right-of-way requires a permit from MDOT.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, this is the time of year when they see snow plowed or shoveled into the right-of-way.
