Improvements for downtown Redford to be completed with federal Transportation Enhancement grant

May 1, 2012 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today awarded a federal Transportation Enhancement (TE) grant to complete streetscape improvements in downtown Redford Township in Wayne County. The Wayne County Department of Public Services, in partnership with Redford Township, will add landscaping and install ornamental fencing, pillars, benches, bike racks, and trash receptacles on portions of Five Mile Road in downtown Redford between Aubrey and Kinloch streets, and Beech Daly Road between Elba Street and Midland Avenue.

"Transportation enhancement projects like this one can have a lasting impact on the community, local residents and businesses," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "Redford Township is making an important investment for the future by improving safety, walkability, aesthetics and the economic vitality of this area."

"This project is a continuation of our commitment to the economic growth of our community," said Redford Township supervisor Tracey Schultz Kobylarz. "The capital improvements will allow for improved pedestrian travel and add to the beautification of our downtown district. This project could not have been completed without the creative thinking and collaborative effort between the state, Wayne County, and Redford Township."

"Local downtown districts are the gathering places that connect people to their community. Projects like this one, that enhance the business district, add essential qualities that help residents and retail businesses feel welcome and build a stronger community," said Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano.

The improvements are designed to provide a coordinated visual identity for downtown Redford and improve traffic safety and flow for motorists and pedestrians alike. The total cost of the project is $618,660, including $402,129 in federal TE funds and $216,531 in local match from Redford Township.

Under federal law, 10 percent of federal surface transportation funds are set aside for TE projects. Administered by MDOT, the grants enable communities to invest in projects such as streetscapes and nonmotorized trails. TE funds provide a maximum of 80 percent of the money required for each project, with the remainder coming from state and local government and the private sector.
