| Larry E. Tibbits, P.E. |
Larry is MDOT's Chief Operations Officer, overseeing its 7 regions, the Bureau of Delivery, Bureau of Development, Office of Research and Best Practices, Safety and Security Administration, and Office of Operations Administrative Services.
He began his career with MDOT in 1970 as an engineer in training and held various positions in traffic engineering, public transportation, as well as railroad coordination during his first 24 years with the department in Lansing. In 1994, Larry was appointed as Bay Region Engineer. Shortly after taking this position, he played a major role in the development of 26 Transportation Service Centers. By moving trained staff to these offices, nearly all of MDOT's programs and services were accessible within an hour of Michigan citizens.
After spending 6 years as the Bay Region Engineer, he was appointed Chief Operations Officer on November 26, 2001.
Larry serves on many national and international committees, most dealing with the reduction of fatalities and serious injuries on our highway system. He represents Michigan as Chief Engineer to the American Association of State Transportation Officials (AASHTO); chairs the AASHTO Safety Management Subcommittee with representatives from all 50 states; represents AASHTO on the Transportation Association of Canada's Chief Engineers' Council; and more recently serves on 2 safety committees of the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses.
Larry and his wife, Rita, have 3 children and 3 grandchildren and are active in their church and community.
