August 7, 2007 -- State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle will speak today to senior-level automobile industry executives about innovations in technology that are enabling vehicles to communicate with each other, as well as with the roadway. Steudle will participate in a panel of experts at a seminar sponsored by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) near Traverse City. The session Steudle will participate in, "Cooperating on the Connected Vehicle and Digital Highway," is being moderated by Steve Underwood of CAR.
Participants also will learn about the new Connected Vehicle Proving Center scheduled to open in Ann Arbor in September. The center is a cooperative venture between CAR and the Connected Vehicle Trade Association. The facility is being funded by a $3.1 million state grant, provided by the Strategic Investment and Commercialization Board.
With the support of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the center will research connected vehicle systems. The proving grounds will enable experts to conduct advanced testing and evaluations.
"The growing connected vehicle industry is extremely important to Michigan," said Steudle. "Michigan is a leader in this technology and MDOT is proud to play a major role."
