September 9, 2008 -- As surely as leaves change color each fall, motorists will see Adopt-A-Highway volunteers out in force this time of year. Michigan's statewide fall Adopt-A-Highway pickup is set for Saturday, Sept. 13 through Sunday, Sept. 21. This will be the third and final pickup of the year. Approximately 2,600 groups will be out during the nine-day pickup period, said the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), and will clean more than 5,700 miles of highways.
Adopt-A-Highway volunteers consist of school and church groups, businesses, civic organizations, Girl and Boy Scout troops, college clubs, and families.
"With the cost of snow removal last winter taking a larger amount of our maintenance budget than normal, the work of the Adopt-A-Highway volunteers is more important than ever," said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. "The volunteers save MDOT more than $1 million dollars annually. We are very grateful for their hard work to keep Michigan looking its best."
Steudle also cautions motorists to watch for the volunteers on the side of the roadway and drive carefully.
A number of two-mile sections of state highway remain available for adoption. For information about how you can become involved, visit the MDOT Web site at www.michigan.gov/adoptahighway.
