Project 4: Oakland County - M-102 to I-696

Start: March 2008       End: November 2008

How traffic is affected:

I-75 lane restrictions are limited to:
  • Round-the-clock single lane closure between I-696 and Eigth Mile Road for work at the Nine Mile Road pier from late June to Late August.
  • Single-lane closures in effect 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
  • Double-lane closures in effect Monday to Friday from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. and from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.

I-696 lane restrictions are limited to:
  • Double-lane closure in effect Monday to Friday from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. and from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
  • Triple-lane closures are permitted between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., seven days a week. (The one exception will be when crews are rehabilitating east- and westbound I-696 mainline over I-75. At that time, two lanes will remain closed around-the-clock for 35 days.)

What we are doing:
  • A $16.5 million investment to restore 26 bridges on I-75 from the Wayne/Oakland county line to the I-696 interchange.
  • The project involves bridges between M-102 (Eight Mile Road) and the I-696 interchange in the communities of Hazel Park and Madison Heights in Oakland County.
  • These bridges have deteriorated to the point that major rehabilitation is the most cost effective fix and is necessary to ensure the safety of the motoring public.
  • Bridge work includes 10 bridges at the I-696/I-75 interchange at the Madison Heights/Hazel Park border. As part of the project, crews will repair pavement on east- and westbound I-696 between Scotia Road (between Coolidge Highway and Woodward Avenue) and I-75.
  • In addition, 16 overpasses will be restored:
    Dallas Road over I-75;
    Dallas Road U-turn over I-75;
    Meyers Road over I-75;
    John R southbound turn ramp over I-75;
    John R over I-75;
    John R northbound turn ramp over I-75;
    Nine Mile Road turn ramp over I-75;
    Nine Mile Road over I-75;
    Woodward Heights Boulevard over I-75;
    Eight Mile westbound service road over I-75;
    Eight Mile eastbound service road over I-75;
    Bernhard Street pedestrian bridge over I-75;
    Harry Avenue pedestrian bridge over I-75;
    Browning Avenue pedestrian bridge over I-75;
    Orchard Street pedestrian bridge over I-75; and
    Highland Avenue pedestrian bridge over I-75.
