The goal of the Ambassador Bridge Gateway project is to make connections -- country to country and neighborhood to neighborhood. When the project is completed, visitors, commuters and residents from both sides of the borders can expect to enjoy:
- better traffic flow to the Ambassador Bridge
- a new freeway interchange that will provide better access to the bridge and the city
- less traffic congestion and safer access to Detroit's Mexicantown
- safe and easy access to Michigan's only International Welcome Center and Mercado
- new landscaping and lighting for the project area
Three phases have already been completed including:
- Rehabilitation of Fort Street from Clark Street to Rosa Parks Boulevard
- Reconstruction of the West Grand Boulevard Bridges over I-75
- Reconstruction of the I-96/I-75 southbound service drive and the I-96 off-ramp from Vernor Highway to Michigan Avenue.
Phase four began in the summer of 2007 and includes:
- Construction of a Bagley Avenue pedestrian bridge
- I-75 freeway reconstruction from Clark Street to 14th Street
- I-96 freeway reconstruction from I-75 to Warren Avenue
- New ramps between the freeway and the proposed Ambassador Bridge Plaza for autos and trucks
- New ramps between the freeway and Vernor Highway for Mexicantown and local community
- Reconstruction and rehabilitation of over 20 bridges on I-75 and I-96
- Soundwall along southbound I-75 between Hubbard and West Grand Boulevard
All roads are expected to be open to traffic by December 2009; landscaping and clean-up will continue in 2010.
