During 31 years of public service to the City of Detroit, Berarducci significantly influenced every aspect of freeway and street development. In 1941, working for the City of Highland Park, he coordinated construction of the Davison Expressway, the first in Michigan. In 1945 he began work on the Detroit freeway system, then in its infancy, and soon was appointed to coordinate the city's role in planning, designing and constructing an extensive network. He was consistently at the forefront of efforts to upgrade freeway design for safety and efficiency and to establish sound financing for state and local road systems. Berarducci closed his public career in 1971 as commissioner of Detroit's Department of Public Works.
