November 26, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin a bridge replacement project on M-22 at the Glen Lake Narrows on Monday, Dec. 1, in order to complete the project by the end of next year's construction season.
The $3.4 million project includes a new aesthetically-pleasing design, with reconstructed approaches, and safer pedestrian access. The current bridge has served the popular Leelanau County location for approximately 80 years.
To ensure the safety of everyone, M-22 bridge traffic will be detoured using M-109. The detour will be posted while the bridge is closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Boat traffic shall be maintained, subject to temporary closures pending construction site safety risks.
The public will be notified one day in advance for 24-hour closures and two days in advance for more than 24-hour closures. Notifications regarding waterway closures will be listed on the DNR access site on Little Glen Lake, the Glen Arbor Township Hall, and at the bridge. Access to all properties will be provided via the posted detour route.
Motorists are urged to be patient and add extra time to their trips through the area. Once completed, and with routine maintenance, the bridge is expected to last for several decades.
