November 18, 2008 -- Concrete reconstruction and bridge work along a 6.7-mile stretch of I-75 from Birch Run to Bridgeport is now complete. Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) crews have completed paving within the area, along with repairs on four bridges over I-75: the Riverview Drive (Bridgeport Township), Townline Road (between Bridgeport and Taymouth townships), Curtis Road (Bridgeport Township), and Busch Road (Taymouth Township) bridges. Work began in April 2007.
During the first phase of this two-year project, crews reconstructed southbound I-75 lanes with traffic shifted to northbound lanes and separated using a barrier wall. Work was completed in November 2007.
The second phase of construction began in May 2008. With work now complete, I-75 northbound traffic, previously shifted to southbound lanes, travels on newly reconstructed northbound lanes.
Motorists travel this stretch of the I-75 highway on four lanes instead of three due to median work which allowed the addition of an extra lane, using the existing median area. Northbound lanes, closed with traffic shifted to southbound bound lanes, reopened to traffic approximately two weeks ago following completion of the median work.
"Although crews had opened all lanes heading northbound and only single intermittent lane closures remained on I-75 southbound, the project did not officially wrap up until remaining signs were removed and crews rolled away the last orange barrels," said Kurt Coduti, Bay City Transportation Service Center manager. "This work was completed late last week."
The work associated with this $50 million I-75 construction project will result in increased safety.
