MDOT repainting M-28 in Munising to add center turn lane

Contact:  James Lake 906-786-1830, ext. 323
Agency: Transportation

September 24, 2008 -- In cooperation with the city of Munising, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is repainting the four-lane section of M-28 to include a center left-turn lane.

The city of Munising intends to install a new traffic signal at the M-28/Elm Street intersection in the spring of 2009.

To improve traffic flow when that change occurs, MDOT is converting the four-lane section of M-28 west of the H-58 intersection to two westbound through lanes, one center left-turn lane, and one eastbound through lane. South of the H-58 intersection - where M-28 makes a 90-degree turn - the four-lane section will be converted to one southbound lane, a center left turn lane, one northbound lane, and one northbound right-turn-only lane.

"Once motorists adjust to the new pavement markings, traffic should flow through Munising more smoothly, particularly at the H-58 intersection," said Jack Bedard, MDOT's Escanaba Transportation Service Center (TSC) manager.

The city of Munising will make changes to the curb and sidewalk at the M-28/Elm Street intersection in advance of the signal installation.
