August 15, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin a streetscape project on M-22 in Empire, as early as Monday, Aug. 18. The project will invest more than $750,000 and includes drainage improvements, streetscaping, pavement milling, and resurfacing on approximately one-half mile of M-22 in Leelanau County.
Weather permitting, work is expected to be completed by early October. Two-way traffic will be maintained on M-22 using flag control. All lanes will be open at night, on weekends, and during holidays. Side streets (including Phillips, Niagara, and Front) will be closed temporarily in various phases and traffic will be diverted while crews install an underground drainage system. Access to all businesses and residences will be provided at all times. This project was funded by MDOT's Transportation Enhancement and Capital Preventive Maintenance programs.
Motorists are urged to watch for traffic changes and drive with caution through the work zone.
