AUGUST 13, 2008 -- Following a successful trial of painted safety markings in a directional crossover on US-41 in Marquette Township in 2006, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is adding similar markings to five more locations this week in an effort to reduce crashes in the area.
In the directional crossover in front of the Westwood Mall, which allows eastbound US-41 motorists to enter the mall parking lot or turn west, MDOT added painted markings on the pavement to indicate that the crossover is only designed for a single vehicle at a time.
MDOT is adding white cross-hatching to the pavement in five additional high-volume directional crossovers on US-41 in Marquette Township:
- Eastbound US-41 crossover toward Wright Street/CR 492 by the Cenex gas station
- Westbound crossover to eastbound, near the Wal-Mart secondary entrance
- Westbound crossover in front of Applebee's
- Westbound crossover at Erickson Drive by Bonanza
- Westbound crossover in front of the Cedar Motor Inn
Multiple cars in the crossovers have been shown to block the vision of other drivers, leading to more crashes in those areas. MDOT is working with local government, local police and the Michigan State Police to enforce crossover violations.
Regardless of the pavement markings, all 19 crossovers on US-41 between McClellan Avenue in the city of Marquette and Wright Street in Marquette Township are only intended for a single vehicle at a time. The crossovers are wider to accommodate semi tractor-trailers.
