August 4, 2008 -- Crews from John Carlo Inc. are mobilizing on a project to rebuild more than six miles of I-94, beginning at the Macomb/St. Clair County line. I-94 is being reconstructed between County Line Road and St. Clair Highway. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction while work is being conducted.
The rebuilding includes replacing culverts over streams, installing new guardrail and fencing, and replacing signs. The initial phase of the project involved placing a traffic shift in order to expedite the reconstruction schedule.
Crews will reduce eastbound and westbound I-94 to a single lane in each direction. Once the procedures for implementing the traffic shift are complete, traffic in both directions will be maintained on the westbound lanes of the freeway. The traffic shift is expected to remain in place until late October.
Starting in November work is expected to be suspended for the winter. At that time, all traffic will be returned to its normal configuration, with westbound drivers using the westbound lanes, and eastbound drivers using the eastbound lanes. All lanes and ramps will be open during the winter shut-down period.
Work in 2009 is expected to begin in early April. At that time, all traffic will be shifted to the newly reconstructed eastbound lanes, with one lane maintained in each direction. The project is scheduled to be fully open to traffic in July 2009.
This $26 million investment is part of Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm's economic stimulus package announced in February 2008. The legislation accelerated more than $67 million worth of improvements on state trunklines in the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Metro Region.
