August 1, 2008 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is close to completing work on US-127 Business Route (BR) from Main Street to Townline Lake Road; and on M-61 from Westlawn Street to First Street, and Main Street to County Farm Road in Clare County. This work, which includes crack sealing and microsurfacing, is part of a pavement rehabilitation project on the two state highways in the city of Harrison. The project began in early July 2008 and is expected to be completed by August 2008.
"In addition to the pavement rehabilitation work, portions of the highways are being converted from four lanes to three," said Terry Palmer, MDOT Mt. Pleasant Transportation Service Center manager. "This traffic change will result in greater mobility for motorists, a smoother ride, and increased safety. Converting highways from four lanes to three, including a center turning lane, gives motorists a much improved roadway and decreases the number of rear-end crashes."
Crews have completed re-striping work on the north- and southbound lanes of US-127 BR and on M-61 to facilitate the lane reconfiguration.
During construction, a minimum of one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on US-127 BR and M-61. When the project is completed, there will be one lane in each direction, with a center lane for left turns.
Traffic volumes on US-127 BR in the city of Harrison average 9,800 vehicles per day.
