| MDOT, police remind motorists about M-28 closure policy

November 24, 2009 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and police agencies in Marquette and Alger counties are reminding motorists and residents that no traffic is allowed on the highway when M-28 between Harvey and Munising is closed for inclement weather.
A few times each winter, the stretch of M-28 running along Lake Superior is closed due to drifting snow and whiteout conditions. During those times, MDOT and the county road commissions suspend winter maintenance operations until conditions subside and the highway can be made passable.
During closures, motorists traveling between the Marquette and Munising areas will need to use M-94 or another alternate route. Police will issue citations to any motorists caught on M-28 when it is closed.
"The closure of M-28 is always done to ensure the safety of the motoring public, maintenance agency personnel, and our officers. We will take a zero-tolerance stance with any motorists on the road who are found to be disregarding emergency traffic control orders that are in place during these closure situations" said Michigan State Police F/Lt. John Halpin of the Negaunee Post. "Troopers from Negaunee and Munising posts, deputies from Marquette and Alger County Sheriff's Departments, and officers from the Chocolay Township and Munising City Police Departments are all working together to enforce these closures."
MDOT has updated the changeable message boards near the US-41/M-28 intersection in Harvey, and the M-28/M-94 intersection in Wetmore, as well as more signs at other intersections with M-28, to alert motorists of closures. The state police also issue press releases to local media when closures are in effect.
