December 1, 2008 -- Structural repairs to the lift bridge that carries M-85 (Fort Street) over the Rouge River in southwest Detroit will require a full closure for the first three weekends in December, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
For each weekend of work, the bridge will close beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday and open to traffic by 9 p.m. on Sunday. During that time, all marine traffic will not be permitted to cross under the bridge.
Recent inspections revealed repairs are necessary to the bascule bridge, which was originally constructed in 1926. The bridge is tentatively scheduled to be replaced starting in 2010 if adequate funding is available. Trucks with loads exceeding 20 tons will continue to be detoured until the bridge is replaced.
During the weekend closures, detours will be posted for each direction. For up-to-date information on this project, visit MDOT's Web site at www.michigan.gov/laneclosures.
